Listen to Beck’s Poignant Letter, “Dear Life”
Beck has finally announced that his new album, Colors, will be releasing October 13th after many delays. Along with this news, Beck released the fourth single (and video) from the album, “Dear Life.”
Instrumentally “Dear Life” is very ambitious as Beck mixes psychedelic sound with an old ragtime piano. I think this odd combination pays off and paints a very vivid instrumental landscape that seems to be the theme. Beck’s previous single, “WOW”, also shared this odd combination of sounds that work out in a weird way. It’s not quite Odelay, but it’s not quite “Loser” either. The sound gives me hope that Beck can deliver a strong follow up to Grammy Winning Morning Phases. The letter to life that Beck is writing is one of someone who is fed up with the norms of life and is looking for some excitement. There seems to be some urgency as he sings “Dear Life, I’m Holding On/How long must I wait/Before the thrill is gone.” It sounds as if the person was unable to find the excitement that they are yearning for so they are “Holding On” to life. Beck’s creativity in these songs leaves a lot to look forward to on the new album.
Happy Jamming!
