Oh, thank the Lorde she’s back again! This time with a wide range of fashion ensembles, jagged dance moves, and isolated gazes. Following Lorde through towering grass, the video begins with an iron gate opening revealing a serene beach. Lorde leans against the gate looking at this perfect place while creating a frame within a frame, inviting the viewer to enter in.

Throughout the video, we see Lorde in gorgeous, bold gowns in various island landscapes letting go and dancing her heart out. During her outbursts of dance, she remains the only person within the frame, pausing to gaze across an empty dining room table at the camera. The look of loneliness during this particular scene has a certain sense of comfort.

Toward the end of the video, the separate clips start to blend together as she frees herself within each scene by dancing around a fire and boxing a light bulb. The music video feels vibrant and chaotic, a different aesthetic from Lorde’s previous videos from her first album, Pure Heroine. For “Royals” and “Tennis Court” Lorde kept her look simple and the videos stayed in neutral colors. In the new Melodrama era, Lorde isn’t afraid of color and embraces the vibrancy that comes along with it.
